About this road

Grant County at its most relentless. This loop out past Ellenboro climbs and drops almost without pause — fifty-six feet of climbing for every mile ridden — on CTH D, WI 81 and the ridge roads between them, and the effort is in the constancy rather than in any one hill. The landmark is visible for miles before you reach it. Platte Mound carries the letter M in white limestone on its flank, 241 feet high and 214 feet wide, better than an acre of stone. Students of the Wisconsin Mining School stomped it into the snow in 1936 and finished it in rock in May the following year, moving something like four hundred tons of limestone with picks, crowbars and wheelbarrows. The mound itself stands 150 feet above the ridge it sits on. Ride it in clear weather and the M is your compass the whole way round.

How it rides

26 corners over 28.6 miles — 0.91 a mile, and 128° of turning for every mile ridden. That scores CS-1, Cruiser on the five-point curviness scale. 59% of those corners are sharp ones, and the road reads as tight.

What it climbs

The road climbs 1,609 feet in total, 56 feet per mile, between 724 and 1,178 feet — 454 feet of relief. The longest single climb is 268 feet over 1 miles, and the steepest grade on it is 9.8%. For this country that is relentless.

Surface, speed and traffic

Paved end to end. 79% of it is back road rather than highway, the other 21% state or US route. Posted speeds run to 55 mph, typically 55, measured across 17% of the route. State traffic counts cover only 3% of these miles, too little to put a number on, which is itself a fair sign of how quiet they are.

Turn-by-turn directions and the spoken guidance are in the app. Every figure on this page is measured from the route itself — corner counts and gradients from the road geometry, elevation from the national elevation dataset, traffic from the state transport departments where counts exist.
