OpenStreetMap
Route geometry, the offline map, road names and shields, town names, water and woodland, public places used as trailheads, and the posted speed limits shown on route cards all come from OpenStreetMap.
© OpenStreetMap contributors
OpenStreetMap data is made available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0: https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/. The cartography we draw from it is our own.
What this obliges us to do. Attribute OpenStreetMap wherever its data is displayed — which is why the credit appears on the route board, in the app, in every GPX file we produce and in every exported map pack. Where we distribute a derived database, we make it available under the same licence. Where we produce a produced work — a rendered map image, a route card — attribution is enough.
Elevation
Terrain figures — climbing per mile, high and low points, gradient — are derived from NASA SRTM 1 Arc-Second Global elevation data, which is in the public domain. Courtesy of NASA/USGS.
Traffic
Daily traffic volumes come from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the Minnesota Department of Transportation published traffic count sites, used as public records. Counts carry the year they were taken; the median is 2022 for the Wisconsin set and 2025 for the Minnesota one. Iowa counts are not included, so the Iowa routes carry no traffic figure rather than a borrowed one.
The scoring is ours
The Curviness Score, the hilliness bands, the effort rating, the route selection, the written notes along the way and the software are ScenicCurves' own work. © ScenicCurves 2026 — trademark pending.

Corrections
The map is a living thing and it is sometimes wrong. If you find an error in the underlying map, the best fix is to correct it at https://www.openstreetmap.org — it reaches everyone, including us. If the error is in our scoring or our notes, write to support@sceniccurves.app.
