Read this once. It is short because it matters.
Ride your own ride
Every route in ScenicCurves is chosen because it is interesting to drive — which usually means narrow, curved, hilly, and out in the country. Interesting roads ask more of a rider than a highway does. Ride within your own skill, your machine, the weather and the light, and never to the pace of the person in front of you.
Watch the road, not the phone
Directions are spoken out loud so you do not have to look. The cards about places along the way are written to be read when you are stopped. Mount your phone where you can glance at it, set the volume before you leave, and do not operate the app while moving.
What is on the road beats what is on the screen
Speed limits, signs, closures, detours, surface conditions and law enforcement are the authority. Our figures come from public data that can be out of date, incomplete or simply wrong for the day you are riding. A posted speed limit shown in the app is what the map data recorded; the sign at the roadside is what you must obey.
These are rural roads
Expect gravel and chip-seal, farm equipment, horse-drawn buggies, loose livestock, deer at dawn and dusk, blind crests, unguarded drops, flood damage after storms, and long stretches with no fuel, no food and no mobile signal. Some routes cross Amish country where a buggy may be over the next rise at 8 mph.
Nobody is watching for you
ScenicCurves is not a tracker and not a safety service. It does not know where you are — your location never leaves your phone — and it cannot call for help. Tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to be back. Carry what you need to get yourself out of trouble.
Weather and season
The Driftless region floods, ices and fogs. Coulee bottoms hold water and frost long after the ridges are dry. Routes are not seasonally gated in the app; that judgment is yours.
If something is wrong with a route
Tell us: support@sceniccurves.app. A closed road, a washed-out shoulder, a hazard we should flag — that is the fastest way to protect the next rider.
The legal part
ScenicCurves provides route information for recreational use. It is not navigation advice for emergency use, not a substitute for your own judgment, and not a warranty that any road is safe, open, passable or legal to drive at any particular speed. Your use of the service is at your own risk, subject to the limitations in the Terms of Service.
